Single Review: “Call a Doctor” by Moving in Slow
Call a Doctor by Moving in Slow
Moving in Slow is back again with yet another extraordinary single. Following the success of Let’s Play Tennis and Tomorrow, released in October and November of last year, front man Laurent Chavannes continues to carve his own path within the indie music scene with his latest single, Call a Doctor.
Music is a mirror through which society reflects, and this sentiment is exactly what is felt in Chavannes’ writing and musicality. Taking inspiration from the turbulent and confusing nature of the human experience, Moving in Slow is quick to show listeners that it’s not just the consumer who benefits from the catharsis of their music, but also the creator. Chavannes draws on the process of writing and creating melodies as a means of emotional processing—something not uncommon, even among the most well-known figures in the industry.
It’s no secret that, in recent years, the topic of mental health in the music industry has been rightfully magnified. A recent study by Emory University found a significantly elevated risk of suicide among musicians, calling for targeted mental health interventions specifically geared toward the music industry. Similarly, a 2023 UK census conducted by Help Musicians revealed that almost a third of musicians experience poor mental wellbeing. Moving in Slow’s newest record is both a personal reflection on the reality of growing older and the feelings that accompany it, as well as a step toward breaking down barriers surrounding mental health in music.
Moving in Slow’s sound is a harmonious blend of 2000s pop punk and emo, creating a stark but pleasant contrast to Chavannes’ soft and comforting vocal lines—found not only in Call a Doctor, but throughout his discography. Call a Doctor carries an almost cinematic ambience. It is reminiscent and relatable; a single that would nestle perfectly into your favourite nostalgic coming-of-age film. Toying with feelings of desperation and depression, Chavannes searches for an escape, a solution, and—suggestively—a release, which is undoubtedly felt as we reach the dynamic climax of the single in the final chorus. Call a Doctor perfectly encapsulates many of the emotions people experience in their formative years, once again delivering a release as impactful as those that came before it.
Moving in Slow continues to flourish, gaining support and traction with their newest single, Call a Doctor, dropping May 22nd—and we wait in anticipation for what comes next.
